I was in and out of the room during Without a Trace last night and did not
see every minute of it. I don't know if I missed something or if I got the
ending right.
From what I gathered at the end, Malone knew that one of the two missing
teenagers was alive and one was dead, right? The last scene I saw was as he
approached the 2 mothers to tell them the news. But, did the story end with
him NOT giving them the news? Were we the viewers left to guess who was
alive and who was dead?

Yes.
Or perhaps more accurately, we were left to not guess, but just to
accept that one story ended happily and another sadly.

A cheap trick either way.

I don't think so. It kept the focus on the process instead of
the results.

What was kind of interesting is that the actress playing the runaway girl,
Scout Taylor-Compton, was a runaway a year or so ago herself soon after
completing the tween/teen movie, Sleepover.
