Fox Reality will debut its first original reality TV series,
"Solitary," beginning Monday, June 5 at 6pm and 9pm ET/PT.
Here's a description:
The eight-week-long show takes contestants to the threshold of
tolerance by challenging their individual psychological and physical
endurance. It's a mind game where the ultimate nemesis lives in the
psyche of each contestant.
Through "Solitary," Fox Reality tackles a new angle that brings reality
TV to places where others have not yet dared to venture. David Lyle,
Fox Reality's COO and General Manager, explains, "We were looking for a
show that jumped out and maybe goes into territory that isn't being
covered in other reality shows."
The show puts a twist on the traditional methods of reality show
elimination. In contrast to the way in which players vote each other
off reality shows, or get eliminated by an authority figure, it is up
to each individual in "Solitary" to decide if they will endure or quit.
Getting out is as simple as hitting the Panic Button, but the winner
will be the individual who can conquer his or her fear the longest.
Contestants never meet one another, and don't even know if there really
are others in the game. The only company available to players in
confinement is the voice of their omniscient "friend" Val. Val is an
ally, confidant, taskmaster . . . and possibly their worst nightmare.
The octagonal shaped pods, which the contestants call home, aren't much
larger than half the size of a pitcher's mound. Everything in their pod
is controlled for them - light, sound, temperature, food and more.
Because the bed in each room slides in and out from a slot in the wall,
the floor becomes fair game for sleep-deprived players during their
lull time.
Within their pod, contestants undergo a series of Tests and Treatments
that challenge their personal threshold, just in case endless days in
solitary confinement aren't enough. The Tests are psychological games,
which require contestants to channel as much patience as they can
muster. For example, a test may include repetitive cycles of number
games, conducted while being subjected to loud sirens and during times
of sporadic sleep deprivation. The Treatments are physical challenges,
which provide contestants with more than enough reason to quit -
assuming they still have their sense of reason! One Treatment, for
example, requires players to revolve themselves in a chair -and each
must complete a certain number of revolutions in a given time period -
or be required to repeat the challenge if they want to continue the
game.
In the end, "Solitary" cracks eight challengers, and one cracks
"Solitary!"
Fox Reality's Original series "Solitary" is executive produced and
co-created by Andrew Golder ("Win Ben Stein's Money", Emmy(r)-Award
Recipient) and Lincoln Hiatt ("Unan1mous").
