Did time travellers in "Time Tunnel" ever manage to change past events?
MrBuddwing...
|
Not that I recall - certainly not the way Dr. Samuel Beckett often did
in "Quantum Leap." If anything, the time travelers of "The Time Tunnel"
failed whenever they did try to alter history - beginning with the
sinking of the Titanic in episode one.

But Tony did apparently convince Althea to go see a neurosurgeon, and left
his fancy 1968 watch to prove to her he was from the future.
And they managed to sabotage that evil Time Tunnel.
Michael Alden...
|
Well, according to the pilot, and I actually just picked up on this now
after about the 5th time viewing it, it was because of them convincing
the captain to abandon ship that anyone at all was saved. Otherwise, if
they hadn't been there, no evacuation orders would have been given.

Not completely successfully, though, since its developers
were able to put its theories to use in time for the fifth
season of "Quantum Leap." :-)
(Seriously, there was a "Time Tunnel" episode with evil
counterparts? I never knew that.)
ANIM8Rfsk...
|
Simply an evil Tunnel itself. The Russians built a tunnel in 1956
(apparently without digging an 800 story complex first, too). They used the
existing Tunnel but lit it green, and swapped out all the computers and
control consoles.

I also remember a Nazi time tunnel in one episode.
wdstarr...
|
I'm necessarily suggesting that this is what Bill Ranck is thinking
of, but in the short-lived "Timecop" tv series there was a story in
which the Nazis, while not possessing time travel technology during

I saw that episode of "Timecop" though I was not a regular viewer,
but I was definitely talking about "Time Tunnel."
"Time Tunnel" was a regular show for me in its original run.
Anyway, the episode I was thinking of had the evil guys using
some sort of capsule in their tunnel which our heros back at
tunnel control (or whatever it was called) knew would not
work. That bit should nail it down. Maybe I'll just go buy
the DVDs . . . ;-)
ANIM8Rfsk...
|
Yep, that's the 1956 Russian Tunnel, that I remembered as Nazis too.
Michael Bowker...
|
Yep when I saw this on cable last year I also was really surprised that
it was the Russian and not the Nazi tunnel.
|
"Secret Weapon"
It's on the DVD set volume 1.
Michael Bowker...

Went to Costco last week and got 1 season part 1 of both Time Tunnel and
Voyage to see what's on the bottom. Pretty good price $27.99. I'm
watching the Voyage first.
Thanks for mentioning these DVD releases.
ANIM8Rfsk...
|
Sure. The Voyage ones look okay, but you'll be amazed at the Time Tunnel
restoration.
Michael Bowker...
|
Ya, but I loved the SSRN Seaview (and especially the flying sub in
season 2). Plus I've seen Time Tunnel on Cable recently, so for me it's
ANIM8Rfsk...
|
Mixed feelings here. I like the Flying Sub, but I *much* prefer the
original Seaview with the 8 windows and the more elegant underside. There's
a theory that the season 2 Seaview isn't the same sub at all but a new, much
shorter one, given that the windows got twice as big on the outside but
stayed the same size on the inside. :-)
Michael Bowker...
|
Ya I sorta remember that. But I like the addition of the crash shutters
on the windows, in latter seasons as well.
ANIM8Rfsk...
|
Ah, the crash doors. Yeah, they looked neat. But I hated them! And now
we're wandering over into the 'tv novels' thread .. . I remember the novel
of the movie (I think it was written by Ted Sturgeon?) explaining that the
windows were oversized hull plates that simply happened to be transparent.
Herculite X or something. They weren't any weaker than the rest of the
ship, so there was no NEED for crash doors.
Of course, IIRC, they shot out one with a handgun in a black and white
episode and it went up just like any other sheet of plate glass, so maybe
the crash doors ARE a good idea after all. :-D
|
|
Plus I've seen Time Tunnel on Cable recently, so for me it's
|
lower priority. Although, as I recall, the pilot (Time Tunnel) was great.

A couple months ago I saw the original movie "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea"
on TCM or maybe AMC. I haven't seen the TV version in many years, but
it was interesting to see how the movie had a different sort of feel from
what I remember of the TV show. The Admiral was more of a hardass in the
movie, at least compared to what I remember of the TV show.
ANIM8Rfsk...

The TV Nelson can be every bit as cranky as the movie Nelson. He never
slapped Frankie Avalon, but I'm sure he would have, given the chance.
Michael Bowker...
|
That's not really a fair comparison, after all who wouldn't smack
Frankie Avalon?
But the point is valid, this is a sixties world. People smoke (a lot).
Nelson is occasionally autocratic and even though it's a civilian
research submarine military discipline is strictly observed.

Steven L....
|
I don't recall the TV Admiral Nelson getting into such a huge fight with
the TV Captain Crane to the point that Captain Crane considered having
to relieve Nelson of duty. There was more of a father-son affection
between the two of them, that only existed for about the first 20
minutes of the movie and then vanished.

And THE TIME TUNNEL has never looked better!

WWII, ended up winning that war and conquering the United States due
to some time traveler's screw-up. In that one our hero returned
from 1940-whatever to discover that the federal time travel facility
had big swastikas all over it and nobody there knew him. (He evaded
capture long enough to power up the machinery and jump back to WWII
and set things right, of course.)
ANIM8Rfsk...

Okay, I read that three times before deciding you must have meant:
"I'm NOT necessarily suggesting that this is what Bill Ranck is thinking"
wdstarr...
|
Yeah, yeah... as usual, the Typo Gods came up with the one that
messed up the message the most.
ANIM8Rfsk...

Somewhere there's an alternate reality where you got that right. :-D

Is *that* where Dean Koontz got the idea...?
ANIM8Rfsk...
|
Okay, I know Dean Koontz, and I know The Time Tunnel, but I totally missed
this reference?
