This is puzzling. From everything I've seen, this is the FOX animated
comedy that generates the *least* amount of "heat".
IOW, no one seems particularly positively disposed towards it, unlike
pretty much every other FOX animated comedy.
So why renew the show with no constituency?!...

DVD sales must have been good. It's the only reason I can think of why

I'm not so sure about that. I purchased American Dad V1 on it's
release date for $34.99 CDN at Best Buy. About 3 weeks later,
it was on sale for $19.99. This could be an indicator of poor
sales.

Not really. Best Buy does a *lot* of seasonal/holiday/weekly
promotions -- and will even discount a recent set when something
comparable is released. If they were doing some kind of Family Guy
discount promotion that 3rd week later, such as discounting all of the
FG sets to tie into the broadcast of the Stewie straight-to-DVD movie
as the season finale or for a guy-centric holiday like Memorial Day,
then that type of an FG promotion would include American Dad just
because it's done by the same creator.
Also, Fox Home Video does periodic discounting of its first season or
two of *most* of its TV-on-DVD sets down to $20 US as a loss-leader.
Could have been one of those campaigns.

Actually, judging by the posts I've seen about it over the years, KOTH
definitely has a constituency of dedicated fans.

Yeah, well getting preempted by football every other week will tend to
put a crimp in your ratings.

was as good as a typical "Family Guy" (which to me is very good).

Also, it holds onto its "Family Guy" lead-in pretty well.

The first season was pretty good and refreshing, I haven't missed one
episode, but the second season quickly bored me to the point I missed
several episodes without knowing it, they need to return to their
original emphasis on Dad's Americanness, and they need to kill that
ugly alien, I creep out everytime he opens his disgusting mouth.
