Are any of the networks showing any scripted programs this summer?

yes. Tuesday Night Book Club.

Is that scripted or reality. The only one that is definitely scripted
is Windfall.

Someone posted that Tuesday Night Book Club was a reality show
deceptively packaged in such a way to look like it might be scripted.
So I shouldn't look for any scripted shows on the public networks until
late September? No reruns of any scripted shows?
If that is the case, it really bites. It's almost as if they're trying
to DIScourage TV watching, not encourage it.
Well, that might be a good thing for society in general and the
reformed couch potatoes as individuals but I don't see how it makes
sense for the networks to discourage general viewership of TV. What if
everyone simply "got a life" and didn't bother with TV any more? Yet
that seems to be the direction the networks are going. Very strange.

Aside from Windfall that is?

We've been around this block a few times already.
But, the fact is, if you exclude 'burn-off' (e.g. ABC's offerings like
C-in-C, "The Evidence", LTP, etc., and The WB's "Pepper Dennis"),
"Windfall" is it for original, scripted programming on the nets.
You want "new", you've got to go to cable. There really are no other
options during summer anymore...

I am astonished at how virtually every scripted show is apparently off
the air this summer. I had expected to watch reruns of a few shows,
like ER, Desperate Housewives, and a few others, as well as pick up on
episodes of shows that I missed, like a couple of Gray's Anatomy
episodes, Crossing Jordan, etc. but ALL of them seem to be off the air.

All the shows you listed above except for ER are being rerun during the
summer. So are NCIS, The Unit, Lost (two episodes each week), 24 (also
doubling up), CBS's whole Monday night lineup, Medium, all the L&O
shows, Charmed, Smallville, Supernatural, 7th Heaven, and quite a few
others. My estimate is at least half of the scripted shows from the
regular season are being rerun over the summer, so I'm not sure what TV
listing you're looking at. There have been some preemptions last week
and this, because of NBA and NHL games on ABC and NBC, respectively.

Aside from Windfall, everything else on the air seems to be reality
shows, talent shows, and that sort of thing, which I don't watch. If it
weren't for documentaries, which I do like, I wouldn't even bother to
turn on the TV some nights. But there aren't a lot of good
documentaries on either.
Is this just a temporary phenomenon or are scripted shows gone
altogether until the fall? I noticed hockey and basketball playoffs on
several channels so maybe scripted shows, even reruns, will be back
when they're over.
I know that their is some kind of general reduction in TV viewing in
the summer as people participate in more outdoor activities but I can't
be the only person who still watches TV in the evenings. What's the
deal here?
It seems to me as if the networks are creating a self-fulfilling
prophecy here: "no one watches TV in the summer so let's not schedule
anything but cheapo reality show crap". That pretty much guarantees
that no one who likes scripted programming is going to watch TV and the
prophecy about reduced TV viewership comes true....

This is the strange thing. It seems like in the last few years there
has been a lot of talk about trying to run new programming year round.
I guess that really means just running new program during the normal
nine months of the year and forgetting about the three summer months
other than for reality shows.
At the very least it has always seemed that summer would be an ideal
time to put on the shows that were dropped with unaired episodes.
Maybe carve out an hour of air time and call it Summer Burn Off, where
they show all of the unaired episodes of their shows.

This is what killed THE WEST WING for me, and apparently for others, as
it never got good ratings again.
I didn't watch it most of one season, I think the season Mark Harmon
got shot, because something I liked more was on opposite, and I taped
that. (Wednesday's an "out" night for me.) And then they didn't have
reruns in the summer, so I never got caught up, so I stopped watching.
Can you hear me now, NBC?

I always thought moving it to 8pm, was a critical mistake. That's family
fun hour, not for serious TV. Apparently they think everyone has TIVO.

I agree that I liked it better when more of the shows would air reruns
during the summer. It gave me a chance to catch up on episodes that I
might have missed and revisit some that I really liked. Still, it is a
business and it seems that all of the networks have been complaining
about many of their shows not doing well in reruns. So it makes sense
to put something else on that makes more business sense in terms of
the cost per episode versus the how much it returns to the network and
the affiliates.
|
If you don't show reruns, people may be more inclined to buy the dvds or
purchase ondemand/itunes etc.

Now that there's Netflix, I might be inclined to *rent* a TV series,
but I can't imagine buying them. I watch TV eps once and I'm done.
Watching TV on a computer or cellphone? Nah.

You are like me. But there are hoardes out there who would do both. And
even then I still won't pay to watch something through Netflix. Unless I
want to collect something (right now I would only want to collect House or
CSI) then I wouldn't spend a penny to watch it again. But many are not like
me.

I find I like watching HBO series several eps at a time, so Netflix
works very well for me. I've just watched two years of ENTOURAGE that
way. Probably would make sense to buy them, but I don't think I'd ever
watch them again.
