When I watch shows in syndication I notice that the commercials are
placed in different spots.
When I mean is, a lot of times the commercial will be in the middle of
a scene.
Then later you will notice where its supposed to have a commercial
(scene fades out) but it continues with the show.
So I have always wondered, why do they move the location of the
commercials?
Someone told me its to add more commercials, but that doesnt make any
sense.
Why change the location of it? Just add more commercials during the
normal commercial spot.

It's so they can create one additional ad break. They think it's better
to have more breaks than longer ones.

I haven't got a clue. I've heard reasons, but none of them stand up. Like
the current TBS Angel reruns, sometimes they'll miss a real commercial break
and then toss in a new one maybe a minute later. Unless they were putting
the breaks at EXACTLY 10 minutes intervals or something, it makes no sense.

Because when you add more commercials than the show had when it was
first run, you are forced to cut a few minutes of the show, in order to
get the total to fit in the same half-hour or hour time slot.
If you cut the piece of the show that's adjacent to the original
commercial break, you might end up cutting out a vital or dramatic
cliffhanger. So instead, the syndicators look for less important scenes
or less important dialogue that can be replaced with additional
commercials. And those scenes end up on the cutting room floor,
replaced with commecials.
